COLUMBUS CARDINALS 20, BELLVILLE BRAHMAS 7
The Columbus Cardinals traveled to Bellville to take on the Bellville Brahmas at the Pasture of Pain last Friday night.
The Cards from Colorado County ended up defeating the Brahmas from Austin County by a score for 20-7.
To start the game, it was a defensive slugfest between the Cards and the Brahmas in the first quarter. Both defenses played so well that the score sat at 0-0 by the end of the first quarter.
It wasn’t until the second quarter that the Cards were finally able to break through and open the scoring. But even then, the defenses in this game stood tall because they carried a 7-0 score into halftime.
Coming out of the half the Brahmas quickly evened the score up at 7-7 in the 3rd quarter. But then the Cards found their run game in the fourth quarter and Brennan Hicks punched one in to go up 14-7 in the fourth quarter.
Shortly after the Cards defense made the play of the game as Kash Wilbert leapt into the air to intercept a ball which he returned for a touchdown. The PAT after the pick-6 was no good leading to a 20-7 finals score.
Passing wise both teams had solid nights with Jack Schobel completing five of his eight passes for 57 yards for the Cards. On the Brahmas side Knox Bauerschlag completed nine of his 20 passes for 114 yards.
Hicks was Schobel’s top target Friday night as he caught four passes for 48 yards with Ty Wiggs catching one pass for nine yards. For the Brahmas Adarius Hutchinson and Bryson Stewart were the top targets with each catching two passes for 21 yards and 19 yards respectively.
On the ground Hicks carried the ball seven times for 41 yards and found the endzone twice, and Bryan Salazar carried the ball 11 times for 69 yards. Kendrick Turner carried the ball 16 times for the Brahmas and racked up 77 yards and Travis Turner was second with 11 carries for 49 yards and a touchdown.
The Brahmas will enjoy the bye week this week while the Cards will be back on the field on Friday, Oct. 3, when they take on the Rogers Eagles in Columbus.
