50 YEARS AGO

County budget okayed; surplus a debate topic The commissioner’s court last week sliced up the 1976 county budget pie, and everyone appeared to be happy with their portion, at least for now. The vote was 5-0.

However, after the pie was sliced and served, there was a surplus left, and it was that surplus on which the discussion centered.

The budget gave employees an across-the-board 6 per cent pay hike, and it gave county elected officials pay increases ranging from up to 15 percent. The budget, overall, anticipates total expenditures of $1,750,166, up about 7 percent over a year ago due mostly to the pay increases, against total resources of $1,814,722.

Auto smashes pillar; 1 killed, 4 are injured One person was killed and 4 injured early Sunday morning when a car slammed into a pillar supporting an overpass on 1-10 east of Columbus.

Roman Hernandez Gonzales, 40, of San Antonio was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Pace Francis Truchard. The injured were taken to Columbus Hospital and later transferred to Bexar County Hospital in San Antonio.

Formal sentencing will be Monday.

Lira was found guilty of murder Alfred Lynn Jaurez, 18, of Wadsworth outside the Midnight Bar in Eagle Lake May 3. Jaurez died later at the Eagle Lake hospital of a knife wound in the chest.

Cyclist is fatally injured in wreck

A 20-year-old New Town man, Joe Dancy, was killed Sunday evening in a wreck involving his motorcycle on the west edge of Eagle Lake.

Police said Dancy’s motorcycle, going west of U.S. 90-A at a high rate of speed, failed to make a curve, ran off the road and struck a high sign.

75 YEARS AGO

Dairyman slugged; employee charged Donald Kolberg, owner of Kolberg’s dairy near Eagle Lake, is reported recovering from a brutal beating about the head which he received late Thursday in the dairy barn near his home.

Held in jail here is Bastilo Anicello, about 59, on the charge of assault with intent to murder his employer for whom he had worked about 12 years. Justice of the Peace Max Conner Monday set his bond at $1,000.

Eagle Lake Church buys Methodist building here The Methodist church building has been purchased by the Eagle Lake Lutheran church and work on the new church is expected to begin in about a month when the old building is dismantled Rev. Leo Ross says.

Garwood Lions to show new fire truck at community fair Garwood Lions club members to show Garwood’s new $8,000 fire truck at their third annual fair and carnival there Oct. 25. The fire truck promised for delivery soon, is the present project for which Lions are attempting to raise money. Their appeal fairs are given to benefit their community.

Baritone will open municipal concert season The season for Columbus Municipal concert association will open Oct. 19 with a program by John Wheeler baritone and Marion M. Wheeler, accompanist.

100 YEARS AGO

Colorado County Fair The Fair Association feels that they are going to offer the best dancing facilities to the younger folks as well as the older ones who feel that they must learn this year’s latest step, the Charleston. The main reason being that they were able to secure the famous Cornlson Happy Seven Orchestra.

First taxes paid

The first person to pay 1925 taxes in Colorado County was Mr. J. C. Armstrong of Wharton, whose remittance for taxes on real estate owned in the Calhoun section was received by Tax Collector Rabel a few days ago. The amount was accepted and the tax receipt issued early today, October 1st., which is the first day taxes can be accepted’.

Hallettsville defeated Flatonia by Schulenburg Sunday by a score of 2-0. The dixie series ended at Atlanta yesterday afternoon, when Fort Worth, six times champions of the Texas League, took the sixth game of the series by a 1-0 score.

District attorney has narrow escape District attorney R.A. Weinert narrowly escaped almost certain death Tuesday when a portion of the tin banister gave way under his weight on the north balcony of the second floor of the courthouse.

The harrowing incident occurred during the Chas Dusek trial. Mr. Weinert had stepped out onto the balcony to have private conversation with one of the witnesses int he case and casually seated himself on the wide surface of the banister which looked strong and rigid.

School enrollment shows increase over last year Three hundred thirty- two pupils have enrolled in the Columbus school this term as compared with 308 for the highest period of last year. The peak of enrollment will increase this number substantially; it is believed by our school authorities.

Bryan’s remedy for Trusts At the Chicago anti- trust conference Mr. Bryan said: “One method for the annihilation of trusts has occurred to me, and to me it seems a complete method, it may not commend itself to you. It is this: That congress should pass a law that no corporation organized in any state should do business outside of the state in which it is organized, until receives from some power created by congress a license authorizing to do business outside of its own state.

General Wilson’s report The war department has made public the abstract of a report from Governor General Wilson of the provinces of Mantases and Santa Clara, General Wilson gives a large amount of statistical information regarding the provinces and their products, which will be of interest to Americans intending to do business is the island of Cuba.
