Lady Cards remain undefeated in District

The Columbus Lady Cardinals stay undefeated in District play after they defeated the Edna Cowgirls this past week.

The Lady Cards had their brooms handy and swept the Cowgirls in the three straight sets to improve to a 7-0 district record.

The match opened with the Lady Cards jumping out to an early lead, on that they would hold onto for the rest of the set. They closed out the first set with a score of 25-18 and quickly shifted their focus to set number two.

In the second set the Lady Cards came out with even more fire as they won the set in dominant fashion with a score of 25-12. The second set proved to be a spark for the Lady Cards because while most team would have taken their foot off the gas in the third set the Lady Cards pressed down on the gas pedal.

In the third set the Lady Cards defense held the Cowgirls to only 11 points while their offense continued to control the game. They came away with a 25-11 win in the third set to win the match and improve to 7-0 in district.

In addition to winning the game one Lady Card made history against Edna as Riley Kainer recorded her 1,000th setter assists for her career. Kainer had to have known she was close to this milestone because during the game against Edna she recorded 27 assists to ensure she made it to 1,000.

Lucy Schobel was right behind Kainer with eight assists against Edna as she looks to be the next player to record 1,000 assists in a Lady Card uniform.

Gracie Schobel led the Lady Cards with 14 kills in the win against Edna. She was followed by Harper Gerik who had eight kills and Emma Calhoun who had seven kills. Caylie Neisner led the team with eight digs followed by Mary Fitzgerald who had seven digs.

Then finally Kainer who recorded five digs along with her 1,000th assist on their way to a win against the Cowgirls.

The Lady Cards now look ahead in the schedule where they will take on Industrial on Friday, Oct. 10, with the opening serve scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
