LA GRANGE — Kreische Brewery and Monument Hill State Historic Sites will host its annual Archeology Day on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All are encouraged to join in celebrating Texas archeology and the history of Kreische Brewery--a site excavated by Texas Parks and Wildlife in the late 1970s--through hands-on activities, guided tours, and themed giveaways.
Sites staff and volunteers are excited to welcome the local community out for another day of educational fun. “This event allows us to really put the spotlight on archeology,” says Sites Educator Jenny Townzen. Hands-on activities will engage participants in every stage of a real archeological dig from excavating artifacts in the site’s dig station, using clues to identify an artifact’s age, and assembling fragments to reveal a complete object.
This year, students can look forward to artifact sorting, pottery making and mending, and cookie excavation, among other interactive stations. Several brand-new activities – such as an Arche-Olympics relay course and glass bottle artifact crafts – will ensure the best experience for all visitors, even those returning for a repeat visit.
Special “ field notebooks” provided by the sites will guide students through the day’s activity stations. Participants can work through the stations, earning stamps in their notebook and unique take-home crafts along the way. Visitors will also enjoy guided archeological tours of the Kreische brewery ruins at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., as well as a grounds tour covering the history of the El Camino Real route which passed through La Grange at 11:30 a.m.
As a premier archeological site in Texas, Kreische Brewery is the perfect setting to explore the importance of archeology in understanding our shared past. “Archeologists help uncover the story of Texas – literally – by unearthing evidence of past communities and industries that have been buried in the soil,” says Townzen.
Saturday’s Archeology Day is part of Texas Archeology Month – a celebration of our state’s rich heritage and archeological past, which helps raise awareness of the importance of proper archeological practices that help preserve our past for present and future generations. Events are held across the state throughout the month of October.
All Archeology Day activities and tours are included with regular sites admission: $5 Adults, $2 Students, Free for 5 and under. For more information, please contact the sites Visitors Center at (979) 9685658 or check out the sites’ social

Visitors who join a guided brewery tour will get a chance to enter the vaulted cellar, the only remaining intact room of the ruins.

One interactive activity at Archeology Day gives students the opportunity to identify fragments and piece together a complete piece of pottery.
