Cleaning up the past

VIEWPOINT OF A TEXAS CHALLENGE ACADEMY CADET

I currently attend Texas ChalleNGe Academy and am a cadet private. Before coming here, I lacked self-control at home and at school. As I am writing this, I have been here for 65 days, and it has been hectic to say the least, but I am glad that I am here.

I had problems at home when I moved in with my mom and went to a new school. At school, I was distracting others and not doing my work. I was not being very successful. I wasn’t actually a bad kid, but the decisions I was making wouldn’t benefit me in life.

When I started my new school, I was good at first, but I then started hanging out with the wrong people and we did some bad things. Mostly I was disappointing my mother, so I came here to correct myself.

All of my life I wanted to join the military and be in the infantry, so I came here to also help me get the discipline necessary for the military. Coming here will help me to exceed the standards that are required to enter. Even though it is chaotic at times, I am learning to be stronger, both physically and mentally, and these assets will help me in the army. I am also learning to listen and to follow the rules. These, too, will help me in the military.

When I turn seventeen, I will be a better person, and I promise myself and my family that I will fix the mistakes that I made once I complete the program. I will show them that I can be better and get a job and actually help support my family. I know that TCA is giving me the skills to be a good soldier, but more importantly a better person.
