COLUMBUS CARDINALS 28, YOAKUM BULLDOGS 10

The Columbus Cardinals picked up their first district win of the season after they defeated the Yoakum Bulldogs 28-10 Friday night.

The Cards dominated the game, and the score reflected that as the Cards cruised to their first district win of the season.

Coming off the bye week, the Cards offense came out in their opening drive and put points on the board after running in a touchdown. Shortly after the Cards offense got the ball back and once again found the endzone to go up 14-0 in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs were not going down without a fight though and they came storming back in the second quarter. Yoakum was able to cut the Cards lead down to only one touchdown as they carried a 14-7 lead into halftime.

With the Cards leading the game, they knew how important the third quarter was going to be, and it was their defense that came up big. The Cards defense held the Bulldogs to only three points in the third quarter while the Cards offense did not score any points.

That left the score at 14-10 going into the fourth quarter, and the Cards offense came back to life. Much like the first quarter the Cards offense found the endzone twice in the fourth quarter while their defense shutout the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter for a final score of 28-10.

Jack Schobel completed five of his eight pass attempts for 63 yards Friday night but also contributed to the rushing attack. He carried the ball 15 times for 139 yards and a touchdown.

Brennan Hicks also had a huge night on the ground for the Cards. He carried the ball seven times for 120 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 15 yards Friday night, but it was Doc Cantu that led the Cards in receiving with two catches for 43 yards.

On defense, the Cards forced four fumbles but were unable to recover any of them. Despite this, they still recorded a takeaway on Friday night. Brody Tribe intercepted a pass during Friday’s victory.

Then finally on special teams Jesus Mendoza was a perfect 4/4 on Points After Touchdowns.

The Cards now look ahead to their next district game when they take on Hitchcock on their home field in Columbus next Friday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m.
