Poll Workers: The Heart of Our Democracy

In a quiet but powerful transition of civic responsibility, Lurlyn Neisner stepped into a vital role in 2020, taking over the duties of the Early Voting Ballot Board from longtime public servant Mae Dean Zajicek. Zajicek’s retirement marked the end of more than 30 years of unwavering commitment to Colorado County’s elect ion process.

Neisner now leads an eight-member team tasked with one of the most critical and labor intensive components of election administration. The Early Voting Ballot Board is responsible for qualifying, processing, and verifying ballots by mail, handling provisional ballots, and overseeing the partial manual hand count team. Their work ensures the integrity and accuracy of every vote cast before Election Day.

Supporting Neisner in this effort is Assistant Judge Mary Ellen Bolton, whose experience and dedication help maintain the high standards set by her predecessor. Together, the board works tirelessly, often for days on end, to uphold the democratic process in Colorado County.
