The Columbus Lady Cardinals hosted the Sealy Lady Tigers on Monday, Oct. 27, for a playoff warm up game.
Both teams jumped on the opportunity to test themselves one last time before the playoffs start and used all five sets in this match.
When the game started, it was definitely a playoff atmosphere as fans of both teams found a way to pack the bleachers on Monday afternoon. The crowd brought a lot of energy, and the play on the court was just as intense.
In the first set though, it was the Lady Cards who came out on top with a 25-18 win. This was business as usual for the Lady Cards and for a team looking to make some noise in the playoffs, they came out and made a big statement by dominating Sealy in the first set.
The Lady Tigers bounced back in the second set though as they evened the match up at one set a piece. The second set only added to the intensity of the match as it went to overtime before the Lady Tigers were declared the winner with a score of 29-27.
In the third set, the Lady Cards bounced back with a 25-14 win to inch them closer to a match win. This lead did not last long though as the Lady Tigers came storming back in the fourth set and pushed the match to its fifth and final set with a score of 25-21.
Then in the final set, the Lady Cards drove the nail into the coffin to end the match with a score of 15-9. This was a big win for the Lady Cards because not only did they defeat a larger school, but they also defeated a District Champion as the Lady Tigers won their District Championship this season.
It’s a huge confidence boost for the Lady Cards, and they will look to build on the momentum from this win as they begin the playoffs.
In this match, the Lady Cards were led by a couple of Schobel’s as Gracie Schobel and Thea Schobel led the Lady Cards in kills against Sealy. Gracie finished the match with 13 kills while Thea recorded 11 kills.
Harper Gerik, Emma Calhoun, Madisan Gluek and Demi Roecker all contributed to the offensive effort as well as they each had eight kills. Then Riley Kainer led the Lady Cards with 23 assists and another Schobel, Lucy Schobel, was second with 17 assists.
Then finally Caylie Neisner led the Lady Cards with 24 digs, while Gerik recorded 11 digs, and Kainer and Mary Fitzgerald recorded eight digs each.
The Lady Cards now look ahead to their playoff journey where they will look to get over the hump and bring another championship back to Columbus.
