Wildcats kennel the Bulldogs

The Weimar Wildcats improved to an 8-1 overall record and a 4-1 district record after they defeated the Flatonia Bulldogs.

In a low scoring game, the Wildcats were able to squeeze out a huge 21-7 road district win over the Bulldogs.

The game started as it was a very tight contest as both teams’ defenses played a very strong game in the first quarter. The first quarter went scoreless but when the first quarter ended, the Wildcats were driving on offense, so they flipped the field to start the second quarter on offense.

So, they started the second quarter by opening the scoring with a 12-yard run from Mikael Shifatu that found the endzone. After a successful PAT from Sammy Hernandez, the Wildcats held a 7-0 lead.

Now, Flatonia’s defense gave up a touchdown, but the Wildcats defense was not about to follow that trend. They continued to frustrate the Bulldogs offense and forced them to punt the ball back to the Wildcats’ offense.

The Wildcats took full advantage of their opportunity as they drove the ball down inside the five. This set up a three-yard pass from Collin Morrison to Jerron Fisher for their second score of the game and after another successful PAT from Hernandez, the Wildcats led 14-0 at halftime.

Coming out of the half, the Wildcats continued to execute well on offense as Fisher found the endzone for a second time. This time he returned a 15-yard kick for a touchdown, and Hernandez did his thing to make it a 21-0 ball game.

Later in the third, the Bulldogs were able to break through the Wildcats defense to cut the lead to 21-7, but that would be the only score the Wildcats would allow. This score held until the final buzzer sounded, and the Wildcats celebrated another victory.

The Wildcats again did most of their damage on offense of the ground and were led by Ace Mesa, who carried the ball 18 times for 135 yards. Behind him was Shifatu who carried the ball 16 times for 69 yards and a touchdown then Fisher who had 13 carries for 65 yards and a touchdown.

In the passing game Morrison completed five of his seven pass attempts for 70 yards and a touchdown. Fisher was the recipient of that passing touchdown and was Morrison’s favorite target as he caught three passes for 42 yards.

The Wildcats have one more game on their schedule as they prepare for their last home game against Kenedy on Friday, Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m.
