County’s voters give loud ‘no’ to constitution

Voters in Colorado County joined those across Texas Tuesday in sending the proposed new state constitution revolving down the drain.

With slightly over 25 percent of the eligible voters going to the polls in Colorado County, all eight propositions went down to a thumping defeat by a margin of at least 3 to 1.

Hotel-Motel tax: $1,346

The city’s new two percent motel and hotel tax produced $1,346 for the city’s general fund in its first two months, City Manager Raymond Peters said Tuesday.

The tax, unanimously voted into being by the city council in July, took effect Aug. 1.

Harrington is elected as Chamber president

John Harrington, local manager for CPL, was elected president of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce Tuesday.

Harrington, elected at a meeting of the board of directors, will take office at the annual chamber banquet Jan. 15 succeeding Richard Heffley.

Community chest inches toward goal

The community chest here inches toward the goal of $4,900 for the 1951 needs of the five participating agencies. Miss Elsie Mattern said that total of $3129.25 has been turned in during the drive but the approximately $1600 Drive Captain Dudley Baker reported Alleyton residents and TCM employees have given has n ot yet been turned in.

County ponders courthouse space problem here

How much additional space is needed at the courthouse?

Commissioners’ court members continued to deliberate that problem in a special session yesterday, with Architect James L. Fox of the Wyatt C. Hedrick firm in Houston conferring with them.

Eagle, Cardinal juniors tangle here tonight

Columbus’ junior Cardinals will try to avenge the 20-7 loss they suffered at Eagle Lake last Thursday night when they meet the junior Eagles tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Stadium.

The stage is set; the actors are ready to do their part to make Colorado County the greatest and the best Fair that has ever been held in Eagle Lake. From early morn to late midnight hours will the spirit of revelry ring out from the shores of the old lake that has guarded the history of the community for many years.

Columbus boy weds in Austin Edward M. Via, the elder son of Mr. And Mrs. E.P. Via of this city, and Miss Prudie Estelle Stovall of Austin were united in marriage in that city Oct. 22.
