Garden club embraces creative fantasy with annual show

The Columbus Garden Club showcased their Annual Garden Show themed “Dungeons and Dragons” this year, Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Nesbitt Memorial Library.

Under the National Garden Club, the Columbus Garden Club welcomed dozens of entries from its 35 members across three categories of horticulture, creative design and botanical arts. Columbus club president Regena Williamson organized the club’s annual show.

“It’s interesting to see what our different members grow and what they come up with. I always tell them to think outside the box when they go out in the backyard and start,” Williamson said. “…It’s hard sometimes [when] you walk out there and think, ‘Gosh, I don’t really have anything that looks good,’ [but] then you start really getting into the nuts and bolts of it and figuring out what can be displayed.”

The horticulture category showcased numerous cuts of flowers, ferns, trees and more plus a wide selection of potted plants. The creative design category challenged gardeners to embrace the fantasy theme. Finally, the botanical arts category featured whimsical fairy gardens.

“I do fairy gardens every year because everyone seems to like doing the fairy gardens,” Williamson said. “You want to do what your members what to do and you want to encourage them. This is a way of doing that, and we come up with some fantastic ones.” Williamson said she chose this year’s “Dungeons and Dragons” theme because of the show’s location in the Meeting Room of Nesbitt Memorial Library. The library hosts a weekly Dungeons and Dragons group for teenagers in the same room.

Spider Chrysanthemum and metal strips represent smoke and fire smoldering from a dragon’s hideout in Heather White’s “Dragon’s Lair” for the Columbus Garden Club’s annual show.

“I felt like this might be a little more exciting, although I don’t think there’s a single one in our group that knows much about Dungeons and Dragons,” Williamson said.

Williamson said the annual show upholds the goals of the Columbus Garden Club. According to their website, the club strives to cultivate education and love of gardening and to encourage environmental protection and civic planting. The club meets every second Wednesday of the month from September through May at 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Lighthouse in Columbus. The club is open to new members who can apply on the club’s website www.columbusgardenclub. org.
