County population down ... down ... down The U.S. Census Bureau reported this week a continuing decline in the population of Colorado County.
The Census Bureau said the county’s population declined from the 1970 official census figure of 17,638 to 16,800 at the end of 1973, a drop of about five percent.
City receives $7,480 rebate on sales tax The city of Columbus received a sales tax rebate this week of $7,480 from sales which occurred in August, City Manager Raymond Peters said this week.
This raised the city’s third quarter total to $10,917 and the total for the year to $57,651.
City’s comprehensive plan gets green light The Texas Department of Community Affairs has approved a grant of $10,000 toward the third and final phase of the city’s comprehensive plan.
Assistant City Manager Donald Hayek made the announcement this week.

H.H. Kansteiner killed in mishap Hillie H. Kansteiner, 56, who died in Columbus hospital about 8:45 p.m. about an hour and a half after he was hit by an auto on a Columbus street last night, became the county’s 13th traffic victim this year.
Mr. Kanstiner, a carpenter, was hit when he stepped from behind a passing vehicle into the path of a 1935 Ford coach being driven by Ernest Robert Norsworthy, 34 of Alleyton, Patrolman Gene Crowder said.
Baby killed by dad’s car at New Ulm In an accident late Tuesday which happened so fast his stunned parents could not account for the cause, little Lonnie Busby Allen, 13-month-old son of Mr. And Mrs. Jesse J. Allen of New Ulm, was killed after he was apparently struck by a car driven by his father, employee of the Mc-Carthy Drilling company.
PMA election scheduled Nov. 18 over county Colorado county farmers will vote Nov. 18 on community committeemen and on delegates to the county Production and marketing administration convention where county committeemen will be elected, Douglas Heck, PMA secretary, announces.
Polls will be open in eight county communities from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and voting may also be done by mail on forms supplied by the PMA office.
Hotel is planned by Irwin
A 34-room, two-story Santanna hotel for Columbus is in the planning stage, E.E. Irwin of Columbus announces.
Bids on construction of the new building were opened yesterday in Austin by Architect Stanley Bliss, who designed the fireproof building, but no announcement of a contract is expected immediately.

Fair next week
The beautiful sunshiny weather of last week and the first part of this has given added impetus to preparations for the big Fair to be held at Eagle Lake Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week, and a great deal has been done toward having everything in readiness for the opening day.
Waldvogel store is burglarized
Burglars entered the large dry goods and clothing store of A. Waldyogel last Tuesday night and carried away a large quantity of men’s clothing and overcoats, silk goods and ladies silk dresses, ladies’ hose, shoes etc. According to Mr. Waldvogel’s estimate yesterday morning.
Aged citizen breaks hip
Mr. Charles Traylor, 78, fell and broke his hip at his home in the northwestern part of town last Saturday morning. He has been confined to his home by illness for some weeks.

Dr. Hunter McGuire, who was surgeon-general on Stonewall Jackson’s staff, submitted a report today to the grand camp of confederate veterans at Pulaski City, Va., which is certain to attract widespread attention. Dr. McGuire is chairman of the history committee appointed by the camp, with a view of preventing the use by school of any history which does not deal fairly with the south in its narration of the events of the civil war.
