Weimar City Council discussed progress on the upcoming sports complex including a $2 million anonymous donation during its meeting, Thursday, Nov. 13.
Director of Finance David Mason reported that the city opened a fund in partnership with the Greater Fayette Community Foundation to construct the complex. The city placed $35,000 into the fund, and an anonymous donor known to GFCF added $2 million. GFCF previously announced having an anonymous donor at the Oct. 9 council meeting.
“The donor, their main portion they’re really contributing towards is going to be the softball and baseball fields,” councilman Kyle Christen said. “…The first step that needs to be done is to get a full-blown survey on the subject tract so that they can actually place the fields to where it’s not just kind of floating out in space. That way we really know what we are working with.”
The council approved the release of a public notice for Request for Qualifications for the Weimar Sports Complex Construction Manager at Risk. City Manager Donald Dixson said that he hopes to get the notice issued as soon as Dec. 1.
The council also welcomed Maria Franco as the new City Secretary following Dolores Stoever’s retirement. Stoever worked for Weimar for over 49 years. Franco started in her position on Monday, Nov. 10.
“The city council, city staff and city as whole recognize the hard work and longstanding dedication of the now-retired City Secretary Dolores Stoever,” Dixson said. “… Dolores, we want you to know that Weimar thanks you for your service.”
Weimar Public Library Director Misty Strode announced the formation of a new book club at the library. Despite already having their first meeting on Monday, Nov. 10, Strode said she hopes to officially launch the club at the start of the new year.
“It sounds like a lot of Weimar people want to have a book club because we had 10 show up and there’s like 10 other ones that want to join,” Strode said.
Dixson provided his City Manager’s report, primarily addressing the ongoing dirty water issues throughout the city. Dixson announced that the city had only received one complaint in the past 38 days. Workers have fixed two dead ends in the Franklin Street Area and plan to target Converse, Grange and Post Office streets near Center Street next. After those areas, workers will move onto West Market, West Church and West Charles streets near Center Street.
The next city council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m. instead of the regularly scheduled 5:30 p.m. time due to the Down Home Christmas Event.
