The Weimar Ladycats are ready to get back on the court to start their 2025 basketball season.
Coming off a year where they finished third in district play, the Ladycats have their sights on an even bigger prize this season.
“We had a young group last year and got to enjoy a deep regional tournament playoff run, and we look to repeat that, but set ourselves up to be in contention for a trip to the State Tournament. We have one of the toughest 2A districts in this area with Flatonia, Shiner, Schulenburg, and us all looking to have big years, so we want to have a double-digit district wins and set ourselves up with momentum for a playoff run!” Ladycats Head Coach Jenny Fricke said. “We will also look to hold our own at our 3 tough tournaments and big school non-district games to set us up to be battle-tested. This is going to be one fun, gritty, and competitive team that will not be outworked!”
While they have some big goals to accomplish this seaosn they also have some big shoes to fill as they lost some talented player to graduation. Despite this Fricke is not concerned about the players she lost and is fully confident in the players that are returning.
“We have big shoes to fill at the point guard spot, but we have 3 returning varsity players that will be amazing at this role, J’Len Conn, Zariah Sims, & Ella Herzik & an incoming freshman, Taitlyn Mican, who will help us out on both sides of that ball,” Fricke said. “Look for Conn and Sims to have major years again, along with our 4-year starters Madison Luckey and Jaiya Cook inside who can do it all! Ty’Rianna Rhodes is a combo inside/ outside threat who will break-through and looks to make a major jump offensively and on the boards this year! The best part of this team, just like last few years, we have 9 girls who can play all- out defense & put up points on offense, and no one cares who gets the credit!”
Fricke will also rely heavily on her senior leadership to lead them this season.
“Led by our three seniors Luckey, Cook, & Ohnheiser, they want the team to come together fast through the threeweek non-district slate and be at a championship level and be focused on our tough district slate,” Fricke said.
Much like the boys’ basketball team, the Ladycats are also looking forward to their games against district rivals.
“With eyes on Flatonia, Shiner, & Schulenburg and knowing they are going to be high level games that we want to show up big for, as we know we have to earn it every night in district season to earn that 3rd part of our season: the POST-SEASON,” Fricke said.
The Ladycats season has already begun but rest assured Ladycats fans that they are working every day to accomplish their goals for the season and hopefully end up in the State Tournament at the end of the year.
