The Navidad Valley CattleWomen are excited to be offering their third annual Collegiate Scholarship. However, this is the first time the scholarship will be promoted as the Elsie Farek Collegiate Scholarship.
Elsie is a founding member of the Navidad Valley CattleWomen and served as chaplain for the organization for 15 years. Elsie loves her God, her family, her community, and (before she retired from ranching) her red Santa Gertrudis cattle. Elsie and her husband, Tom, were long time Polled Santa Gertrudis breeders and were honored as Breeders of the Year by Santa Gertrudis International.
They were also founding members of the Santa Gertrudis Bluebonnet Class Sale that has been held in the Hallettsville area for over 20 years. Elsie still lives on their ranch in Lavaca County and continues to serve and bring a quiet strength with her in her daily duties.
Applicants interested in being considered for this honor must be graduates of a high school in Lavaca, Fayette, or Colorado County or equivalent thereof. Additionally, they must be a junior, senior, or graduate student in a Texas college or university studying agriculture. The winning applicants will be paid a one-time award of $1,500 to be used for tuition or other education- related expenses.
The scholarship must be accepted in the year that it is won. Applications must be postmarked no later than Dec. 31, and sent to Navidad Valley CattleWomen (P.O. Box 221, Schulenburg, TX 78956). Full scholarship rules and the application may be found at nvcw.com or requested from Susie Shank at weshank6@ gmail.com or (979)820-8964. The Navidad Valley CattleWomen, a local chapter of the Texas Cattlewomen, is a non-profit organization that supports and promotes the beef industry.
The Navidad Valley local works to support local youth with scholarships and provide quality information on the industry and how to incorporate beef into a healthy diet. Additionally, they work to support the community with targeted outreach projects that include a beefy twist. For more information on Navidad Valley CattleWomen follow them on Facebook @nvcw. org or guests are always welcome at the membership meetings.
