Chamber now taking names for employee of year The chamber of commerce announced this week that nominations are being accepted at the chamber office for the annual Employee of the Year award.

The award will be presented at the annual chamber of commerce banquet Jan. 15 in the Columbus High School cafeteria.

Board decided to proceed on unanimous vote

The Columbus school board voted in a special session Monday to go ahead with the idea of creating a full-time school tax assessor- collector office.

The vote was 5-0. Voting was Delmar Fehrenkamp, Jerome Wicke, Mrs. F.T. Barfield Jr., E.H. Baumgart Jr. And Karen Brod.

Richard Heffley is re-elected Chest President

Richard Heffley was re-elected president of the Columbus Community Chest at an election of officers Nov. 25 at CPL.

Clinton Voelkel was elected vice-president and A. J. Brune was re-elected secretary.

Tonight settles bidistrict hopes of Cards, Bears

You can’t get Coach Bill Hartley to say much about his team’s chance against the Bastrop Bears for the bi-district crown.

“They’ll tell you tonight,” is what he says, in effect.

Santa’s reindeer to draw sleigh through town Sleigh bells will bring reindeer with big antlers will prance and pant; their ankles popping in rhythm with the bells, when Santa Claus comes to Columbus at 1 p.m. Dec. 23 for the big parade sponsored by the Columbus merchants.

KC’s to hold initiation for 35 here Sunday Knights of Columbus Council No. 2971 will hold an initiation here Sunday when some 35 candidates will be initiated.

The program for the day will be mass and holy communion at 8 a.m., breakfast at 9 a.m. and exemplication of the first degree at 10 a.m.

J.D. Reitz is called to duty with Airforce John D. Reitz, a second lieutenant in the air reserves, and son of Mrs. E.A. Reitz of Alleyton, reported to Brooks AF Base in San Antonio last week where he is promised to active military duty.

100 YEARS AGO

John Kessler ends life with pistol Last Thursday morning, Thanksgiving Day, at about 10 o’clock Mr. John Kessler snuffed out his earthly existence, standing before the mirror in his room at the Judge E.B. Mayes’ home, using a 45-caliber pistol for the purpose.

His body was found a few minutes later by Connie Shamburger, an employee of the Burger Cafe who had been asked by Mr. Kessler late Wednesday night to come to his room at 10 that morning.

Texas Central manager meet at Cuero Local manager, Mr. Joe Shaw, of the Texas Central Power Co., attended a meeting of the employees of the company from the Gualdape and Rice groups of properties at Cuero Monday. He was accompanied as guests by Mr. E. E. Irwin and “ye editor.”

Auditors complete task of auditing county books The auditing firm, Hill & Co. Of Austin, completed its task of auditing the County books last Saturday, and their report was formally accepted by the Commissioner’s Court at a meeting called that day.

The report covers all phases of the county’s finances and shows the condition of all funds.

Second crop of corn As some of our planters have signified their intention of trying Mexican June corn next year, the following letter of Dr. Norris is still opportune: Eagle Lake — To the Galveston News, Since the crusade inaugurated by the News for diversification of crops, an advance has been made in farming that is every year assuming greater proportions. Mention has been made in the News of the planning of rice and of the increase in the amount of corn and sugar cane i n this community. What the writer desires to call attention to now is what is possible in the way of second crops.
