The Rice Lady Raiders hosted their Rice Lady Raiders Swamp Invitational at Rice Consolidated High School this past week.

During the tournament they picked wins against Luling and Wallis Brazos to triple their total wins from last season.

One of the biggest reasons why this happened is because the Lady Raiders are starting to finally play with some structure. There’s no confusion about where to go on the court, and every is playing their role to near perfection.

There are obviously some things Head Coach Reagan Beal wants to clean up but overall, he is pleased with his team and the wins they have collected. Beal has also put a lot of stock into slowing the game down for his team.

In both of these games he was seen telling his point guard to slow down while the rest of the team got into position. I think that is perfect for the Lady Raiders because as the game goes on and their season goes on, they will start to speed that process up and watch out when they do.

But for now, keeping things slow is perfect because there is no shot clock, so what is the rush?

They need to take their time, understand how to read the court, and where lanes open up and how to take advantage of those opportunities. Slowly but surely, they are starting to get it and it’s proved to be a big boost to their confidence as they have three wins so far this season compared to one last year.

Another thing that stuck out was the scoring depth, see. Last season Beautiful Johnson and Diamond Fuller leaned on heavily for their scoring. Some games were just those two that scored, and at this level that’s not going to win a lot of games.

This season though, Jordyn Fuller, Blessin Adams, Iya Farrow and Lia Becerra have shown that they also have a scoring touch to their game. They were constantly calling for the ball and putting up shots which is great to see because if they continue with this shoot first mentality, they will continue to pick up major wins.

The Lady Raiders now look ahead in their schedule when they will take on the Sealy Lady Tigers on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 6:15 p. m.
