School board names Youens as tax-assessor/collector
The Columbus school board voted Tuesday night to Hire Billy Youens, a former teacher, as the school system’s full-time tax assessor-collector.
The job will pay about $9,000 a year.
Bell takes it on chin again
R.L. Oldmixon, local manager for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. Asked the city council Monday night if it had considered his alternative offer for a rate increase. The council said “no.”
The council said it hadn’t had time to discuss the alternative, and suggested Oldmixon stay home once so they could discuss it.
Fugitive nabbed by FBI team, Weimar Police
Charles Sitterson, wanted by federal authorities for an unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, was arrested Monday night in a country home near Weimar.
The arrest was carried out by a team of FBI agents and the Chief of Police Fred Vornsand and Patrolman Joey Targac of the Weimar Police Department.

Columbus vs. Pearland tomorrow for regional title in Rosenberg
Win, lose or draw, the football season for Columbus will come to an end tomorrow night at the Lamar high school stadium in Rosenberg when the Cardinals meet the Pearland Oilers for the region 9 championship. Game time is 8 p.m.
It will be the end of high school football careers also for seniors Walter Schnauhelt, Edard Willrodt, Garland Hayes, E.C. Gumdelach, Bobby Hastedt, Aubrey Landston, Lee Brown, Jim Jack Richardson, David McCane, John Maples and Gene Mieth and for Arthur Becker who will be ineligible next year.
Santa’s reindeer to draw sleigh through town
Sleigh bells will bring reindeer with big antlers will prance and pant; their ankles popping in rhythm with the bells, when Santa Claus comes to Columbus at 1 p.m. Dec. 23 for the big parade sponsored by the Columbus merchants.

County OKs $6500 flood control job
What will probably be the biggest single flood control project financed with the Colorado County flood control money, an estimated $6500, was authorized by commissioner’s court Monday.
The project will be an 8115-foot ditch to drain about 771 acres, affecting five landowners in the “Brandt bottom” south of Weimar.

Mrs. J.M. Alley
The death of Mrs. J.M. Alley occurred at her home in Glidden last Thursday night at about 8:30, following a stroke of apoplexy that morning.
She had just written a telephone of condolence to Mrs. R. S. Garrard of Bastrop, at about ten o’clock Thursday morning and as she turned to give the message and some change to her daughter the coins dropped from her hand and she stooped to pick them up h er daughter noticed that she was groping and seemed unable to control the movement of her hand.
Phythians hold big district meet here
Live Oak Lodge No. 58, K of P., held one of the biggest and most enjoyable district meetings that has been held in the district, which is comprised of some six lodges, Tuesday night.
129 guests were seated at the long tables which bore an abundance of roast turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, potato chips, pickles, celery, rolls, coffee and pie.
Auditors complete task of auditing county books The auditing firm, Hill & Co. Of Austin, completed its task of auditing the County books last Saturday, and their report was formally accepted by the Commissioner’s Court at a meeting called that day.
The report covers all phases of the county’s finances and shows the condition of all funds.

Bay City Tribune: A friend tells us that J.C. Dennis, the energetic manager of the Green Duncan farm in Caney, is harvesting about 600 bushels of sweet potatoes per acre, many of them being too large for the market. These, with those that are cut or bruised, or too small for market, are being fed to his hogs by the wagon load.
Hillsboro’s new directory will show the population of that town to be 9300.
