Raiders undefeated in Flatonia tourney

The Rice Raiders brought home tournament champion medals Dec. 13 as they closed out a three-day, four game tournament in Flatonia.

The Raiders were a perfect 4-0 in tournament play Dec. 11 - 13.

Rice vs. St. Joseph

Rice secured their first win of the tournament in the matchup against Bryan St. Joseph. Leading the way in scoring were senior AJ Jenkins with 19 points, senior Avan Woolridge 12 points and Junior Jireh Cobia 11 points.

Also contributing points for the Raiders were: Jeremiah Grounds (seven points) Kordae Johnson (three points) and Jalen Jordan, ZaMarion Utley and Charles Scott with two points each.

Woolridge was 4-4 from the free throw line, and Cobia was 3-4 on free throws.

Woolridge was the top rebounder with six, and Jenkins had five rebounds. Johnson had four steals, Grounds had three, and Jenkins and Woolridge each had two steals. Grounds, Cobia and Jenkins each had three assists, and Woolridge had two assists.

Altogether, the Raiders improved to 7-13 from the free throw line, which helped them get the 58-42 victory.

Rice vs. Luling

Rice secured another victory against the Luling Eagles, with Jenkins leading the way with 22 points, three assists, and two steals.

Woolridge scored 16 points, Cobia had 13 points, and DJ Amos had 11 points. Other Raiders who put up points were: Kordae Johnson (five points), Jeremiah Grounds and Jalen Jordan with two points each.

Cobia was the top rebounder with five rebounds, followed by Amos with four rebounds. Cobia also had four assists, Jenkins and Amos each had three assists. Jenkins and Cobia had two steals each.

Rice vs. Waelder

The Raiders secured another victory against Waelder. Jenkins led in scoring with 25 points followed by Johnson with seven points and Grounds with six points.

Also contributing to the Raiders points: Cobia, Amos, and Woolridge with two points each.

Jenkins was there with eight rebounds, followed by Amos’s three rebounds. Jenkins and Cobia led with four assists followed by Johnson with two assists. Grounds led the Raiders in steals with three, followed by Johnson with two. Jenkins also went 3-3 from the free throw line.

Rice vs. Flatonia

The final game in the tournament was against Flatonia on Saturday, Dec. 13. Turnovers were a problem for the Raiders throughout the game. Jenkins, Grounds and Cobia were instrumental in making some really tough shots at the basket and also making three-pointers.

The Raiders won with a final score of 52-34.

The Raiders will take a holiday break following their Dec. 16 game against Brazos at home. They will be back in action Dec. 29-30 as they travel to Ganado for a two-day tournament.
