The Columbus Cardinals made the trip to Schulenburg to take on the Sealy Tigers during a tournament.
The Cards unfortunately came up short with a score of 64-25 with the Tigers dominating the game from the opening tip off.
The Tigers have had a little bit more time to gel together as a team as most of the Cards basketball players were wrapped up in football. The Tigers executed their systems well early on in the game and jumped out to an early lead.
They suffocated the Cards offense and forced them to turn the ball over, which led to point that extended the Tigers lead. The Cards’ offense searched for answers in the 1st quarter but only scored four points.
The 1st quarter ended with a score of 24-4 in favor of the Tigers, which was not a spot the Cards wanted to be in. The Cards made adjustments going into the second quarter and started to slow down the Tigers’ offense.
Defensively they started to press the Tigers the full length of the court, and it paid off. They flustered the Tigers and started to get them to turn the ball over which led to points for the Cards as they started to cut into the lead.
While the turnovers led to points for the Cards, they still had a tough time getting shots to fall and finished the 2nd quarter with 10 points on the board. As the 2nd quarter went on, the Tigers started to figure out the Cards’ defense and got back to pouring on the points.
The Tigers scored 16 points in the 2nd quarter and carried a 40-10 lead into halftime. After the break both teams scored 10 points in the third quarter to bring the score to 50-20, going into the 4th quarter.
In the 4th quarter, the Cards had a tough time in the rebound department as the Tigers were in full control of the boards. They won the offensive rebound battle which helped them extend their lead late in the game.
The Cards offense also had a tough time on offense as the Tigers defense slammed the door shut, allowing only five points in the final frame. On the other end of the floor, the Cards gave up 14 points in the 4th quarter to arrive at the final score of 64-25.
The Cards are experiencing some early struggles, but they have a talented roster and will iron out these problems in no time. They will slowly start to get some players back from football, and they will start to round into form in the coming weeks.
The Cards will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 16, when they go on the road to take on the Bellville Brahmas at 7:30 p.m.
