The Columbus Lady Cardinals in their most recent two games picked up one win and one loss.
They took on Port Aransas in the Schulenburg tournament championship game and then came back home to take on Bay City in a non-district match.
Vs. Port Aransas, L, 47-43 In their first game of two, the Lady Cards found themselves matched up against Port Aransas. The Lady Cards had defeated this team once before in this tournament, and now they were the only team standing in the way of a championship victory.
Port Aransas was not going to go down without a fight though and came out and challenged the Lady Cards. The Lady Cards were up to the challenge and kept their high offensive output going.
They scored 43 points in this game, which is usually enough to win. The Lady Cards however played a team that had a chip on their shoulder from losing to the Lady Cards once before.
Port Aransas gritted their teeth and found a way to win this game as they just barely edged out the Lady Cards 47-43. Losing by four points is a tough pill to swallow but that is a championship game in a nutshell.
The Lady Cards knew they could bounce back from this loss and in their next game they did.
Vs. Bay City, W, 55-30 In their second game the Lady Cards returned to their home court to take on the Bay City Blackcats. In this game the Lady Cards returned to form and played a very complete offensive and defensive game.
Their offense exploded onto the scene in the first quarter as they were moving the ball well and scoring early and often. They jumped out to a early lead which they just continued to build on for the rest of the game.
Bay City had no answers for the Lady Cards offense and were having an even tougher time trying to figure out the Lady Cards defense. The Lady Cards defense suffocated Bay City’s offense and held them to only 30 points in the game.
This defensive performance was a huge confidence boost for a team that had just given up 47 points in a loss. They responded in a big way and will look to continue to stack up wins early in the season.
The Lady Cards sit with a 13-3 record and will look to pick up their 14th win of the year when they take on Edna on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 6:15 p.m.
