Lady Cards Lasso the Cowgirls

Lady Cards Lasso the Cowgirls

The Columbus Lady Cardinals picked up their first district win of the season after defeating the Edna Cowgirls last Tuesday.

The Lady Cards and the Cowgirls played a very tight and competitive game which is expected for district games, but the Lady Cards were able to grit their teeth and come away with a 38-37 win.

The game started out with the Lady Cards defense shining brightly because they had to make some big plays early. The Cowgirls were all over the Lady Cards in the opening minutes of the game and were able to score some points to get an early lead.

The Lady Cards were up for the challenge though as Annabelle Norrell came up with a steal and a block to give the Lady Cards some momentum. This led to some offense for the Lady Cards, and they started to score as well, but the Cowgirls kept pushing.

The Lady Cards held their first lead of the game with a 5-4 lead with 3:03 left in the 1st quarter when their defense made another big play. With the Cowgirls creeping up on retaking the lead, Thea Schobel came up with a huge block that sent play back the other way.

The Cowgirls though did not let these big plays affect them and eventually found themselves leading 9-6 over the Lady Cards late in the 1st. This is when Jada Brown stepped up on offense for the Lady Cards, sinking a three-point shot to tie the game up at 9-9 and the fans knew from this moment on this game was going to be high-flying on both ends of the court.

The Cowgirls were able to reestablish another lead in the 2nd quarter leading 15-11, and the Lady Cards offense started to push back again. Brown made another big play as she stole the ball from the Cowgirls who were about to go on a fastbreak, but Brown’s steal allowed the Lady Cards to keep up their offensive pressure.

The steal eventually led to points for the Lady Cards but could not recapture the lead from the Cowgirls. The Cowgirls actually ended up extending their lead to 2819 in the 3rd quarter.

Trailing on the scoreboard, the Lady Cards went back to work and started to cut into the Cowgirls lead. The Lady Cards went on an 11-2 run capped off with another Brown three-pointer to tie the game at 30-30.

Both teams traded scores to arrive at a 34-34 score when Candee Pitchford intercepted a Cowgirls pass and found an open Brown in the corner. Brown like she had done a lot, this game put up a shot and knocked it down to give the Lady Cards a 36-34 lead.

They were outscored by the Cowgirls 3-2 for the rest of the game, but the Lady Cards had done just enough to defeat the Cowgirls 38-37 for their first district win of the year.

The Lady Cards will be back in action the day after the New Year holiday when they travel to take on the Tidehaven Lady Tigers on Friday, Jan. 2, at 6:15 p.m.
