The Columbus Cardinals currently have an 0-3 record but that does not tell the full story of this team.
While 0-3 is less than desirable and the team and the coaching staff would say they can be better they aren’t really in that bad of a spot.
Let’s look at the big picture with these Cards for a second and examine what’s been going on so far this season. For starters, they have played some very quality basketball teams so far this season.
They played Bay City, Sealy and Bellville which as teams that know how to play a complete game and how to execute their systems. They know how to find success and usually have a ton of success each season that ends with deep playoff runs. So, there is no shame losing to a good team in fact it benefits the Cards because as the old saying goes, teams can learn a lot from losses.
On top of that it is only the first three games of the season; early season struggles happen to the best teams. It’s nothing to hit the panic button over, and the Cards aren’t doing that any time soon.
They know they have a talented roster, and they can compete for a playoff spot and make a deep run. They just have to get some more time together and start to develop some chemistry, and they will be stacking wins in no time.
But that’s also the third pillar of them starting the season with an 0-3 record; they have not had a ton of time together. Some of the Cards’ basketball players also play football, and the football team made a run all the way to the Regional Finals, which was only a few short weeks ago. Because of the football team’s success, the basketball team did not have a ton of time to practice as a full unit. Meanwhile teams like Bay City, Sealy and Bellville had already played in two tournaments and settled into their game, so the Cards are at an even bigger disadvantage to start the year.
Despite all of this though, each game they have played so far, the Cards have gotten better and better. They are starting to settle into the season, and they are figuring out their roles on the team, and they are starting to execute better on both sides of the ball.
Their most recent loss came from Bellville, but the Cards only lost by one point and were in that game until the final buzzer. It is a positive sign for things to come as they enter their district schedule when they return from the New Years holiday.
District games are very important, and the Cards know that, so they will look to come out with some fire when they open up their district schedule in the coming weeks.
The Cards will go on the road to take on the Tidehaven Tigers for their first district game on Friday, Jan. 2, at 7:30 p.m.
