The League of Women Voters of South Central Texas will celebrate Women’s History Month by honoring exceptional local women at its fourth annual Women Making History event on March 8 at Historic Casino Hall in La Grange.
This two-part event recognizes women from our five-county area in two ways.
The first invites the community to nominate outstanding women from Colorado, DeWitt, Fayette, Gonzales, and Lavaca counties for special recognition at the League’s 2026 Women Making History event. All are welcome to join in the joyful work of discovering and honoring women who have made South Central Texas extraordinary through their courage, determination, heritage, initiative, steadfastness, and vision. Each story offers inspiration for others, showing that we all have the potential to create a legacy of hope, courage, and the motivation to pursue our own paths.
The second is the Student Showcase competition with scholarship awards. Area high school students are invited to submit essays or poems celebrating heroic Texas women, past and present, whose courage, sacrifice, and dedication have impacted their families, communities, or the world – especially women whose contributions have gone unsung. Three student submissions will be selected to receive $500 cash awards and the opportunity to present their work at the March 8 Women Making History event. The submission deadline for both Community Nominations and the Student Showcase competition is midnight on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2026. Nomination and Showcase entry forms are available on the League’s website ( lwvsouthcentraltx. org). For more information, contact League President Janis Richardson, janis@janisrichardson. com.
