Weimar to increase police compensation

Weimar Mayor Carlton Tucker announced that the city intends to increase its police compensation during a City Council meeting on Thursday, Dec. 18.

After a discussion between council members and staff in private, executive session, Tucker made the announcement and directed Interim City Manager and Director of Finance David Mason to review the city’s budget and propose numbers. Mason will bring back the proposed changes at a future council meeting.

“We want to be well above the average [compared to] surrounding areas so we can attract the most capable candidates possible and then, once they’re brought on board, that we can retain them,” Tucker said.

Tucker said he and a few other council members have been concerned about the police compensation package for a while now. Weimar Police Department has been understaffed for months. Currently, only three of the eight total positions are filled.

Before his recent resignation, former Police Chief David Socha said he had two potential candidates for the department under review.

Weimar’s next regular City Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 8 at 5 p.m.
