Colorado County Habitat for Humanity (CCHFH) is currently working on two homes in Columbus - a new build for the Acevedo family and a home renovation for a family that will be selected in early 2026.

AL&M Building Supplies and Great Southern Wood partnered during their Yellawood’s Day of Volunteering at the Montezuma Street site, where volunteers removed old siding and flooring and hauled off truckloads of debris. Columbus Physical Therapy volunteered at the Dewees Street site, installing new siding in support of Habitat’s 32nd new home build.

Volunteers worked alongside Habitat board members and community volunteers, providing hands-on support that is helping move these homes closer to completion for local families.

Columbus Physical Therapy owners Kristina Hill Stork and Rachel Post volunteered at the construction site at 711 Dewees Street, assisting with siding installation. “It was my first time using a nail gun, and I felt like I needed a lot of supervision,” Post said with a laugh. “It was empowering and makes you feel like you’re really contributing to something important for another family.”

Reggie Williams, YellaWood reman manager, said he was impressed by how much was accomplished in just a few hours of volunteering. “We also learned about the Critical Repairs Program for senior citizens. I plan to come back with a friend to volunteer,” he said.

AL&M’s owner Alison Korell said, “It’s heartwarming knowing this Habitat home was fully paid off, yet the family chose to sell it back to Habitat because they wanted another family to have the same chance at a better life.”

YellaWood sales representative Stephanie Choate added, “Volunteering for Habitat on a home remodel was incredibly eye-opening and rewarding. I learned that becoming a Habitat homeowner involves more than income and need - it includes an application process, financial education, and a thorough approval process that truly sets families up for long-term success.”

Habitat supporter Barbara Peterman also volunteered at the Montezuma site. “Preparing for repairs at the Habitat Home, I was struck with the fact that volunteers are building better lives in Columbus, one house at a time,” she said. “The work wasn’t difficult and the volunteers were enthusiastic - a truly meaningful experience I’ll repeat soon!”

“Local businesses and volunteers are the backbone of everything we do,” said Mark Korell, AL&M owner and vice president of the board for Colorado County Habitat for Humanity. “Their support helps us build strength, stability, and self-reliance for families right here in Colorado County.”
