A multi-vehicle car accident a few miles east of Schulenburg resulted in one fatality and the closure of Interstate 10 westbound for around 10 hours, Monday, Dec. 29.
Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Billy Ray said the investigation and final crash report is still pending completion and finalization but reviewed the facts of the case.
“The crash occurred when a Honda CR-V left the roadway for unknown reasons and struck a guardrail,” a press release from Ray said. “The impact caused the guardrail to become severely damaged and block both westbound lanes of IH-10.” Two other vehicles also struck the guardrail. An 18-wheeler involved also “subsequently struck the damaged guardrail and then collided with a concrete barrier.” The 18-wheeler promptly burst into flames.
Carlos Manuel Diaz Trejos, 64 of Houston, was the driver of the 18-wheeler and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda CR-V was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries.
Fayette County Sheriff's Office announced the closure of the westbound lanes from Highway 90 to Schulenburg around 4:30 a.m. in response and the resulting cleanup. Schulenburg and Weimar Volunteer Fire Departments battled the fire while FCSO, Texas DPS and Schulenburg Police Department assessed the scene. The roadway opened later that afternoon.
