50 YEARS AGO

Attorney General John Hill and the employee of the Year will share the spotlight Thursday night at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce annual banquet.

The banquet will be 7:30 PM. Thursday and the Columbus High School cafeteria. Jerry Mikeska BBQ, King of the Southwest, will cater for the affair.

The caller told Continental officials in Houston that the bomb was said to go off at 9:25 p.m., the very moment the bus stopped at Rippers’ bus station in Columbus.

Columbus Cafe hit by burglar for $617 cash

Sam Restivo, owner of Columbus Cafe, told police Sunday morning that someone had stolen $617.00 from his office during the night.

By nightfall, Columbus police covered most of the money and arrested a suspect, C.D. Jones, 17, of New Ulm.

Jones was charged with burglary. He was held in lieu of a $1000 bond.

Pull, Man, Pull

Sometimes when Gerion Nelson of Bernardo feels at the end of a day that he’s been pulling 10 tons, chances are he has.

Nelson is a tractor-pull enthusiast, a big one. He has about 50 tropies now to prove his enthusiasm as well as his success in one of the nation’s fastest growing sports.

Leyendecker zeroes in on surplus again

Commissioner Crockett Leyendecker zeroed in on the “surplus” funds of the other commissioners Monday but got someone else to do the talking for him: Attorney Phil Gates.

Leyendecker said he had hired Gates out of his personal funds to argue the case at the commissioners’ court meeting on behalf of Leyendecker’s Precinct 3.

Garwood to elect three district officials next Tuesday Five candidates are seeking three places on the board of Colorado COunty Water Conservation and Improvement District No. 2 here in the election next Tuesday.

Polls will be open in Garwood Veterans Memorial Library from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The three receiving the most votes will be elected for two-year terms.

Mrs. Fritz hired as county school office secretary

Mrs. Karen Fritz of Columbus was hired last Saturday by the Colorado County school as secretary to County School Superintendent Herbert A. Schroeder Sr.

Mr. Schroe3der succeeded Lavo Wagenhoft Jan. 1. Mrs. Fritz was hired after the five-member board interviewed her and two other applicants for about an hour and a half Saturday afternoon.

Mrs. Carl Mattern named librarian when board meets Mrs. Carl Mattern, wife of a Columbus grocery man, was elected librarian of Mansfield Memorial Library at a meeting of the library board Monday night in the library.

Miss Mattern was named to replace of Mrs. Ruth Gillespie, who died suddenly Dec. 23 at her job. Mrs. Gillespie had served the library since it opened in 1948. Mrs. Mattern was accepted as a substitute when Mrs. Gillespie was absent.

97 YEARS AGO

Celebrate Golden Wedding Mr. And Mrs. Fred Gruedigam celebrated their golden wedding at their home in Frelsburg on Wednesday of last week. A jolly time was had, with all of the children present except Mr. Henry Bruedigam of Southland.

Columbus Cardinals get new sweaters

15 members of the Cardinal football squad were proud of possession of beautiful new sweaters donated in recognition of the work done by them and the season just closed. The sweaters are dark red with a cardinal and white outline on the left sleeve.
