The Weimar Wildcats took on the Shiner Comanches in an intense playoff like district game.
The Wildcats lost this game with a score of 5651to drop to an 0-3 district record falling just short by six points.
Fans of both teams know how intense these games can get, and this one was no different. Fans of both schools packed the gym in Weimar, and the players on the court fed off the energy from the crowd.
The game started with the Wildcats coming out hot and jumping out to an early 5-2 lead in the first quarter. Treycen Espitia actually broke a 2-2 tie with a three-point which got the Wildcats faithful roaring.
The Wildcats lead did not last long though as Shiner came storming back with a 15-3 run to bring the score to 17-8. The Wildcats did not back down though as Collin Morrison came up with a block that led to points for the Wildcats to make the score 17-10.
Then right after that, the Wildcats came up with another defensive stop that sprung Espitia on a fast break. He made no mistake with the ball and easily laid it into the basket to make the score 17-12 and just like that the Wildcats were back in this game.
Shiner stared to extend their lead shortly after with the Wildcats staying close on their tails. The score sat at 24-17 and Shiner found themselves on a fastbreak, but Sammy Hernandez turned on the jets and chased down the Shiner player and swatted their shot attempt away which brought the crowd back to life.
The Wildcats once again fed off this energy in the gym and went on a 7-0 run to tie the game up at 24-24. That 7-0 run was capped off by a Morrison three-pointer and gave the Wildcats a big confidence boost.
In the third quarter, the Wildcats kept pushing but still found themselves trailing 44-38 but found some magic in the dying seconds of the third. Hernandez once again made a big impact on the game as he knocked down a three to cut the lead to 44-41, but they did not stop there.
Espitia with two seconds left on the clock blocked a Shiner shot attempt to keep the score at 44-41 going into the fourth. This play gave the Wildcats a lot of momentum going into the fourth and were looking to build on it.
Early in the fourth, the Drew Montgomery blocked a shot with the Wildcats trailing 46-43, and that led to an offensive opportunity for the Wildcats. Espitia was in the middle of it again as he knocked down another three to tie the game up at 46-46.
Unfortunately, Shiner outscored the Wildcats 10-5 for the rest of the fourth, and they came away with the 56-51 win.
The Wildcats will put this loss in the rear-view mirror and look ahead in their schedule, which will be against Ganado on Friday, Jan. 23, at 7:30 p.m. as they continue to hunt for their first district win.
