COLORADO COUNTY SHOWDOWN:

The Columbus Lady Cardinals made the trip down State Highway 71 south to Rice Consolidated High School to take on the Rice Lady Raiders.

These rivalry games are always fun because the schools are so close to one another that it seems like the entire community comes out to watch.

The Lady Cards were the ones that came away with the win this time with a score of 58-24, so let’s take a look at what happened.

Lady Cards

Since the Lady Cards won, they get to go first, and they played a very complete game in the first half and scored a lot of points. They forced the Lady Raiders to turn the ball over a good handful of times in the first half, which led to points for the Lady Cards.

On the flip side, the Lady Cards also moved the ball effectively; they were quick in their transitions and when they got set up on the offensive side, they executed their systems well.

They took advantage of defensive lapses by the Lady Raiders and knocked down their shots at the free throw line when they got them. It was a strong first half but in the second half more towards the end of the game they started getting a tad sloppy.

The Lady Cards started to turn the ball over a little bit more, and shots were not going in as easily as they did in the first half. A large amount of credit goes to the Lady Raiders defense who started to frustrate the Lady Cards offense late.

However, the Lady Cards stayed true to their game and just kept on playing their systems, and eventually they started to run away with the score late to seal the victory.

Lady Raiders

The Lady Raiders had a tough go at it int he first half of the game as mentioned before. They had a hard time connecting passes and were out of sorts both offensively and defensively.

In the second half though, they played a much more complete game and started to get under the Lady Cards skin. They were blocking shots, coming up with steals, and most importantly, scoring.

Lady Raiders Head Coach Reagan Beal made his team slow the game down in the second half, specifically on offense. He made sure his players were executing the systems properly, going to the right spots, making the right reads and things of that nature.

It worked too because the Lady Raiders started to heat up late in the game, specifically from three-point land but came up just short on the score board.

The Lady Cards will look to continue their strong district run when they go on the road next week to take on Industrial while the Lady Raiders head to Palacios looking for their first district win. Both games will be played on Friday, Jan23, with a tip off time set for 6:15 p.m.
