Columbus superintendent set to retire

Columbus Independent School District Superintendent Jim Connor is set to retire on June 30, following the end of the school year.

Theresa Carruth, administrative assistant to the superintendent, confirmed Connor’s retirement plans. The Citizen was unable to speak to Connor due to the Monday holiday.

Columbus ISD School Board will meet Thursday, Jan. 22, in a special session to learn about the hiring services offered by Texas Association of School Boards (TASB). Carruth said the board may contract TASB or another agency to search for a new superintendent.

“I’ve probably been through five superintendents over the years, and we’ve…done the hiring on our own, and we have used TASB before,” Carruth said. “You get more coverage when you use an organization like TASB.”

Carruth said she is unsure of the timeline for the board’s decision on whether to use a hiring agency. However, she said districts aim to start the search as early as possible as soon as they know someone is leaving.
