The Columbus Cardinals won back-to-back district games to extend their winning streak to seven games.

The Cards defeated the Yoakum Bulldogs and the Edna Cowboys to improve their district record to 6-0 and stay in first place in the standings.

@ Yoakum, 52-49 (OT), W

The Cards first game had a flare for the dramatic as they went into overtime against the Bulldogs. The Cards were on the road so going into overtime while on the road is not the best position to be in.

The Cards remained calm though and had a very strong paint presence that they leaned on heavily in the overtime period. Brody Tribe, Wyatt Tipton, Brody Vinklarek and Rylan Carruthers were major factors in establishing the paint presence.

Fans of the Cards know about these guys but those who don’t know all of those guys are all big and strong players that are strong on their feet. But they also know how to score in tight and play a finesse game to get points on the board.

All of them played football too, so they got into the season a little bit later but once they joined, the team the Cards saw a ton of success. On top of that Eddie Garcia is controlling the ball on offense and his patience with the ball to allow his big men to get open was a factor in the Cards picking up the win against Yoakum.

In their second game, the Cards were coming off an OT victory and wanted to get this one done in regulation. They took the game right to the Cowboys and much like the game against Yoakum, they did a good job of winning battles inside the paint.

While the Cards dominated the paint, they also found some success from three-point land as Garcia and Brennan Hicks knocked down some big-time threes to extend the Cards’ lead.

The Cards now sit firmly in the top spot of the district standings, but they know they have a target on their back. On top of that the season is not over yet, and they will continue to work and drive plays until they secure a playoff spot and a district title.

The Cards will host the Tidehaven Tigers on Tuesday, Jan. 27, with a tip off time of 7:30 p.m. looking to secure another district win and keep their winning streak alive.
