The Columbus Lady Cardinals sit on top of the district standings with a 9-1 district record after they defeated Tidehaven Tuesday night.
The Lady Cards needed overtime to come away with the win, but the extra minutes are worth it to hold the top spot in the district standings.
The Lady Cards started the game off really strong on Tuesday night as they fed off the energy from the Lady Cards fan base. They put points on the board early in the game and established an early lead.
They held onto an 11-6 lead but then Presley Drozd shot and made a three-pointer to extend their lead. Tidehaven started to work back on the score board, but the Lady Cards still held onto a lead in the dying seconds of the first quarter.
With 10 seconds left on the clock in the first quarter, the Lady Cards led 1812 and once again Drozd came up with a big play. She sunk another threepoint shot to extend their lead to 21-12 going into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, it was a big quarter for the Lady Cards defense, and Thea Schobel led the charge. In the first half, she had two blocks and one steal to limit Tidehaven’s offensive opportunities in the second quarter.
The Lady Cards carried a 31-28 lead into halftime and in the third quarter Tidehaven came out swinging. They limited the lady Cards to only eight points in the third quarter while they scored 12 points on offense.
This gave Tidehaven a one-point lead, 40-39, going into the fourth quarter, but the Lady Cards came into the final quarter with some confidence and worked their way back into the game.
The Lady Cards outscored Tidehaven 12-11 in the fourth quarter to time the game up and send it to overtime. In the dying seconds of the fourth quarter though, the Lady Cards defense made another big play as Candee Pitchford stole the ball from Tidehaven to keep the game tied and send it to overtime.
In overtime the Lady Cards returned to the game they were playing int he first quarter. Their defense played a great overtime period and held Tidehaven to only two points.
Then on offense the Lady Cards scored seven points to come away with a 58-53 win over TIdehaven. This win boosted the Lady Cards to first place in the district and now set their sights on the playoffs and a possible district championship.
The Lady Cards will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 6, when they take the court for a Colorado County Showdown against the Rice Lady Raiders at 6:15 p.m.
