Columbus High School announced new security policies on parking lot safety and student IDs on Facebook, Tuesday, Jan. 27.
Under the new policy, students will not be allowed to visit their vehicles during school hours from 7:50 a.m. to 3:36 p.m. Deliveries for students, including food deliveries, must be placed on the designated metal shelves and be labeled with the student’s name.
For student IDs, all students must wear them on a lanyard around their neck, not in pockets or backpacks. The first three infractions will result in a warning. The fourth and fifth infraction will result in an hour of after- school detention. Six or more infractions will result in in-school suspension. Students may purchase a replacement ID or lanyard at the library.
Columbus Independent School District Director of Operations Garret Schindler said the changes are part of routine safety and security updates throughout the school year.
“The most important thing that we try to tell all of our staff and kids any time we make an adjustment is that it’s all based on an observation to improve overall safety,” Schindler said.
Schindler said changes follow suggestions made by external evaluations and audits done by various school agencies, including Region 4, one of 20 regional education service and assistance centers established by the Texas Legislature in 1976. Schindler said Region 4 visits a few times a year to review new laws and security evaluations.
