Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill cooking program celebrates America 250
La Grange, Texas – Kreische Brewery and Monument Hill State Historic Sites will present Red White and Stew, the next installment in their foodways programs inspired by America’s 250th anniversary. Visitors are invited to join living history interpreters at the Kreische House for a celebration of America’s diverse culinary traditions from the Republic of Texas era. Red White and Stew will be Saturday, February 28th from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm as a come-and-go demonstration and activity.
The program will feature campfire cooking of T. J. Green’s stew and other historic recipes to bring to life the smells of 1840s Texas. Visitors can also take part in a hands-on activity to create a pocket spice box, a compact kit used for seasoning meals while cooking on the go.
Along with Red White and Stew, Kreische Brewery- Monument Hill will partner with the historic Faison House in La Grange to offer a day of thematic programming. From 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, the Faison House will present “Nathaniel Faison: Life After Perote Prison.” This program explores how Nat Faison, a survivor of the Dawson Massacre, became one of the wealthiest men in Texas and helped develop La Grange. Guests may also view the Faison House’s newest exhibit on African American history and sample a 19th-century dessert.
