The Weimar Ladycats took on Lexington in their host tournament in Weimar, TX and unfortunately came away with a loss.

The Ladycats are under new leadership as their longtime coach Roger Maupin called it a career last season.

The Ladycats now have Amanda Machicek as their new head coach, and she is going to try to continue Maupin’s winning ways. Machicek was Maupin’s assistant coach for many years, so the team is very familiar with her coaching style and knows what she expects from them each game.

In the game against Lexington, the Ladycats defense had a tough time finding their footing and fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning. The good news is the Ladycats offense is still strong as they responded with three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead 3-2 after one inning.

In the second inning, the Ladycats scored one more run to extend their lead to 4-2 by the end of the second inning. Then in the third inning the Ladycats defense again struggled and gave up five runs to make the score 7-4 by the end of the third inning.

Lexington’s offense continued to score runs in the fourth inning as they added four more runs to their lead to make it an 11-4 ball game going into the bottom of the fourth inning.

In their last chance to score runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Ladycats pushed hard but only scored two runs. This led the game to its final score of 11-6 and a loss for the Ladycats.

Offensively they were led by Faith Cantwell and Taitlyn Mican who both hit doubles and combined for two RBIs. Then Sam Rangel hit a triple recording one RBI and Rangel also went a perfect 3-3 inside the batter’s box for the Ladycats.

In the circle, the Ladycats have big shoes to fill as their ace Taylor Smith has graduated from the Ladycats. Alazay Moreno had a fairly strong showing, giving up 11 runs on nine hits while striking out two batters in the process.

Defensively the Ladycats still have a little bit of work to do, but with Machicek at the helm the Ladycats are already hard at work ironing out all of the wrinkles in their game.

The Ladycats will be back in action on Thursday, March 5, when they travel to participate in the San Marcos Tournament.
