The Columbus Lady Cardinals picked up a big district win this past Friday over the Palacios Sharkettes.
The Lady Cards won the game 9-0 and despite the high score, the Lady Cards did not score a run until the third inning.
In the first two innings both teams had their chances, but it was a defensive battle to start this district’s game. Both teams put on a defensive masterclass to start the game but then when the third inning rolled around, the Lady Cards’ offense woke up.
After holding the Sharkettes to zero runs again in the top of the third inning, the Lady Cards offense scored six runs in the bottom of the third. This opened the scoring for the game, and the biggest play of the inning was Aggie Rodriguez hitting a double.
She drove home two runs to bring the Lady Cards to a lead 6-0 with only one out on the board. The Sharkettes secured the two outs they needed shortly after, and they went back on offense in the top of the fourth.
The Sharkettes went three up, three down though, as they grounded out with their leadoff batter. Then Mckenna Eden struck out two batters to put the Lady Cards back on offense in the fourth inning.
The Lady Cards added one more run to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kaylea Foster hit an RBI single that drove home a run and made the score 7-0. The top of the fifth saw two more ground outs from the Sharkettes and another strike out from Eden, and the Lady Cards were back on offense again.
After a single and two walks, the Lady Cards had the bases loaded with only one out. Then Foster made another big play to drive a run home to make the score 8-0. That was followed by Allie Cranek, who hit a single as well that brought another run home to arrive at a 9-0 score.
The game went scoreless after this sequence, and the Lady Cards picked up their first district win of the season with a statement win over the Sharkettes.
Eden played a very strong game against the Sharkettes pitching a shutout and only giving up two hits. She only walked four batters as well while striking out 10 batters through seven innings of play.
The Lady Cards now look ahead to their next game on Tuesday, March 10, when they will travel to take on their district rivals, the Hallettsville Lady Brahmas, at 7 p.m.
