SAS students write Texas History essays
All SAS 7th grade participants with Kathryn Newman (3rd), Emma Fitzgerald (1st), & Indalecio Espinosa (2nd) in front.

Students from Danette Cantu’s 7th grade class at St. Anthony’s Catholic School recently participated in the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) Essay Contest. This year’s challenging subject was to choose and compare flags from the Texas Revolutionary Period; there were many from which to choose.

The most familiar flag that comes to mind might be the “Come & Take It” flag from the Battle of Gonzales. However, there are many others such as the Bloody Arm flag from the Battle of Goliad, the Troutman or “Liberty or Death” flag, the simple Burnet flag used during the early days of the Texas Republic, and volunteer company flags such as the New Orleans Grays flag or the bold Alabama Red Rovers flag.

These were some of the interesting choices made by the top winners of the contest, Emma Fitzgerald – 1st place, Indalecio Espinosa -2nd place, and Kathryn Newman – 3rd place. Congratulations.

Significant research, effort, and expression went into the finished compositions which were judged by the member of the local DRT chapter, Dilue Rose Harris. Each participant received a certificate, Texas pin and chapter pencil, with the winners receiving a small award. The top essay was forwarded to the district and/or state levels for the potential of further awards. For more information on the DRT, please visit the website at www. drtinfo.org or contact Marilyn Wade ([email protected]).
