FROM THE GOVERNOR

Abbott, AT&T deliver 150 laptops to Los Fresnos CISD students LOS FRESNOS — Governor Greg Abbott joined AT&T to distribute laptops to Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) students.

“The reason why we’re here is because 150 seniors have demonstrated that they’re either ready to go to college or ready to go straight into a career,” said Governor Abbott. “Over the past two years, we’ve invested $7 billion in career and technical education, knowing how important that is for our students, for their future. We are going to be handing out laptops to 150 seniors, seniors who have demonstrated the brand of excellence you are able to achieve here in the state of Texas.”

“We are honored to join Governor Abbott today in Los Fresnos to put 150 computers in the hands of local high school students and celebrate 150 years of communications innovation,” said AT&T South Region President Leslie Ward. “What began with a single phone call in 1876 has become a way of life – and AT&T has been there every step of the way at the forefront of connecting people and businesses. We cannot predict what the next 150 years will bring, but we do know this: whatever comes next, we’ll be the ones connecting you to it.”

“The Los Fresnos CISD Education Foundation is where dreams meet determination,” said Los Fresnos CISD Education Foundation Chair Adan Garcia. “Our vision is a district where every individual’s aspirations are met with unparalleled support, and today’s laptop distribution is a great example of how we can support local students. We appreciate Governor Abbott, AT&T, and Compudopt for their support of Los Fresno students and for the 150 years of innovation that brings us here today.”

The laptops, funded in collaboration between AT&T, Compudopt, and Los Fresnos CISD Education Foundation, were given to graduating seniors in Los Fresnos as a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the first telephone call.

The Governor was joined by Senator Adam Hinojosa, Representative Janie Lopez, Los Fresnos CISD education division Chair Adan Garcia, AT&T Texas division President Leslie Ward, and AT&T South Texas division Vice President Adrian Quintanilla.

Abbott announces federal assistance for corner pocket fire in Texas panhandle AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved a request from the State of Texas for a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) for the Corner Pocket Fire in Donley County, which threatened and damaged homes and infrastructure in the Texas Panhandle and forced local evacuations.

“The state of Texas is working swiftly to provide additional funding to local officials and firefighters who battled the Corner Pocket Fire in Donley County over the weekend,” said Abbott. “This FEMA grant will help offset costs associated with firefighting operations as our brave firefighters battle blazes and protect the citizens of this great state. While this fire now contained, I encourage Texans to heed the guidance of local officials and take all necessary precautions to keep themselves and their loved ones safe as increased wildfire danger continues.”

As of this morning, the Corner Pocket Fire has burned an estimated 234 acres and is now 100 percent contained. The fire prompted the evacuation of approximately 340 homes and threatened more than 2,160 homes in the surrounding area. State and local response personnel are actively engaged in suppression, containment, and public safety operations.

The approval of a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) makes the State of Texas eligible for 75 percent reimbursement from the federal government for eligible costs associated with wildfire suppression. These grants are available to states and local jurisdictions to support the mitigation, management, and control of fires that threaten to become major disasters.

The Texas State Emergency Operations Center remains activated at Level III (Increased Readiness), and at the Governor’s direction state emergency response resources remain deployed by the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to support local wildfire response efforts across the state.

Texans can find wildfire resources including safety tips, current fire information, and damage reporting tools in the TDEM Disaster Portal online at disaster.texas.gov.

Abbott receives award for veteran services at American Legion Post 76 in Austin AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott celebrated the 107th birthday of the American Legion and received the National Vietnam Veterans of America State Award for Veteran Services.

“America truly is the greatest force for freedom the world has ever known, and the reason for that is because the United States of America has had the mightiest military in the history of the world. We as a state will continue to support those who served our country at home and abroad,” said Governor Abbott. “Texas is proud to be home to more veterans than any other state in the United States. The award we got today is a tangible way that shows Texas is at the top of our game, ensuring that we are providing our veterans with the support and resources they need and deserve. No state loves our veterans more than the great state of Texas.”

“The American Legion is delighted to host Governor Abbott at our historic Post 76 in Austin in celebration of the American Legion’s 107th birthday,” said Commander Jim Brennan. “Our Post has been located at this same site overlooking Lady Bird Lake since purchasing the house in 1924. We are thankful for Governor Abbott and the State of Texas for their outstanding services supporting veterans and their families.”

The Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) supports veterans who served during the Vietnam War. The American Legion has spent over a century championing veterans’ benefits, patriotism, and community service.

VVA recognized Texas as one of the most veteran- friendly states, awarding the State Award for Veterans Services to Texas for the state’s excellence in pro-veteran state-level legislation, cost-of-living support for veterans, and employment and retirement security.

Abbott was joined by VVA Legislative Director Jim Brennan, VVA National Secretary Bill Meeks, and veterans of American Legion Post 76.
