The Columbus Cardinals basketball team had a great season that ended just a little too early in their eyes.
They captured the District Championship and are still earning some honors from the district.
The All-District team selects multiple standout players from each team in the district to form something like an All-Star team. The Cards performed so well that they had 10 of their players selected to be on the All-District team.
Brody Tribe was a big piece for the Cards this season on both sides of the ball, using his size, speed and strength to his advantage. Tribe dominated inside the paint on both sides of the ball scoring points while shutting down the opposition’s top offensive threats.
This earned him the honors of Co-District MVP, but the MVP honors for the Cards do not stop there.
Brody Vinklarek was named the Defensive MVP for the District and for a really good reason. Vinklarek brought his football style of play to the basketball court and was a tenacious defender.
With the mentality of a pitbull, Vinklarek was vicious and blanketed the opposition forcing them to make errors. He forced several key turnovers in games this season and played a big role int he Cards deep playoff push.
Next was the First Team All-District selections, and there were two Cardinals that were chosen. They were Eddie Garcia and Rylan Carruthers.
Garcia was a solid point guard as he used his ball handling skills to get defenders out of position. Then he used his vision and basketball IQ to find open teammates for easy scores and sometimes Garcia took the ball to the basket himself to score because he is that talented.
As for Carruthers he was one of the trees that helped the Cardinals reach the success they did this season. He used his big frame and strength to box out defenders and was a rebounding machine coming up with second and third chance opportunities on the offensive side of the ball.
The Second team saw four Cardinals selected, Trey Koheffel, Braylon Fisher, Brennan Hicks and Wyatt Tipton. These four played a very strong defensive game which helped them earn a spot on the Second All-District team.
They also had a ton of offensive upside as they were usually on the court together throughout games. They developed some strong chemistry on the court and found different ways to score as they were always moving the ball trying to extend leads during games.
Then finally the honorable mentions were Bryan Salazar and Kiyan Johnson. Salazar was a great complimentary piece for the Cards this season as he played a very steady game this season for the Cards.
As for Johnson, he is just a freshman so to be named is a big accomplishment already. This young man is going to continue to develop his game and look to jump into a First Team All-District spot soon.
These Cards worked hard this season on the basketball court, so it is always nice to see them get recognized for all their hard work.
