Czech folklore in Texas on display March 31

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) invites the public to an engaging and educational presentation, “Czech Folklore in Texas: Festivities and Cuisine,” to be held at Hanslik Hall on March 31, at 6 p.m.

An essential part of all migration processes is the transfer and transformation of cultural heritage. This was especially true for the Czechs—particularly Moravians— who immigrated to Texas in significant numbers during the second half of the 19th century. These early settlers brought with them rich traditions, including religious customs, family practices, public celebrations, and a distinctive culinary heritage.

However, life in the United States presented a vastly different political, economic, and social landscape. As Czech immigrants adapted to their new environment and interacted with diverse communities, their traditions evolved. The result was a unique cultural blend—one that reflects both the preservation of Old World customs and the influence of their new American home.

This presentation will explore the reasons behind this cultural transformation and trace the development of calendar customs, festivities, and traditional dishes among Czech Texans. Drawing from both Czech and American historical sources, the discussion will highlight how heritage was maintained, adapted, and reimagined across generations.

The featured speaker, Lukáš Perutka, is an associate professor at Palacký University in Olomouc, Czech Republic. He has taught internationally at the Institute of Technology in Monterrey, Mexico; the University of California, Berkeley; and Charles University in Prague. His research focuses on transatlantic and triangular relations between the United States, Europe, and Latin America, as well as migration from Central Europe to the Americas.

Dr. Perutka has authored numerous scholarly articles and four monographs, including Za to spasitelské moře. Emigrace Rožnovan _

do Texasu (Across the Messianic Sea: Immigrants from the Rožnov District in Texas).

This program offers a unique opportunity to gain deeper insight into the cultural roots and evolving traditions of Czech Texans. The public is encouraged to attend and experience this enriching exploration of heritage, history, and cuisine.
