Colorado County May General Election

Elections Office: countywide voting approved

Many local May general elections canceled

Colorado County Elections Office announced its approval for countywide voting for the upcoming May 2 general election, Tuesday, March 17, though many general local elections have been cancelled.

Countywide Voting

The countywide election model will utilize five voting centers on Election Day. Three locations in Columbus, Eagle Lake and Weimar will be open for early voting. Locations in Nada and Frelsburg will be added on Election Day.

“This is a significant achievement and an important step toward full countywide voting,” Elections Administrator Rebecka LaCourse wrote in the announcement.

1. Nada Community Center – St. Mary’s at 7825 Hwy 71, Nada, Texas 2. Weimar City Hall at 106 E. Main, Weimar, Texas 3. Frelsburg Volunteer Fire Department at 1669 Farm to Market 109, New Ulm, Texas 4. Eagle Lake Community Center at 100 N. Walnut, Eagle Lake, Texas 5. Colorado County Election Center at 1117 Travis Street, Columbus, Texas However, the county must fulfill one additional requirement after the May general election to receive approval to permanently adopt countywide voting for future elections. The county elections office must submit a post-election report that includes feedback from voters, input from each member of the Colorado County Election Advisory board and official confirmation that the May election was conducted through countywide voting.

“Your participation in this final step is essential to securing full approval for countywide voting going forward,” LaCourse wrote.

The county will collect citizen feedback through an online poll available on the county website, via email to [email protected], or by letter either mailed or dropped off to the elections office.

Local Elections

The Saturday, May 2 general election will cover Columbus, Eagle Lake, Weimar, the school districts of Columbus ISD, Rice CISD and Weimar ISD, the Glidden Fresh Water District, the Garwood Water District (WCID No. 2) and the Rice Hospital District.

However, majority of the elections have already been cancelled due to unopposed candidates. Columbus cancelled the election for Councilmembers Place 3, 4 and 5. Eagle Lake cancelled its special election for the two unexpired city council vacancies for a one-year term. Weimar ISD cancelled its election for Board Trustees Place 1 and 2. Glidden Fresh Water District cancelled its election for three board members. Rice Hospital District also cancelled its election for Board Members Place 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Eagle Lake will still hold a general election for the mayorship and two councilmember positions for two-year terms. Weimar will also place the mayorship and City Councilmembers Place 2 and 4 on the ballot. Columbus ISD will have two board trustees for three-year terms on the May ballot.

The last day to register to vote for this election is Thursday, April 2. Early voting will run Monday, April 20 through Tuesday, April 28.
