The Columbus Cardinals soccer team put together a very historical season this year despite being eliminated in the Area Round.

The Cards captured the Bi-District Championship for the first time in school history, and it is a positive sign for things to come in the future.

The Cards regular season saw them post a 16-44 record which was much better than the 6-8-5 record from last season. In addition to that, the Cards had a 5-6-3 record in district play last season and missed the playoffs.

This season, however, they came storming back with an 11-1-2 record putting them in second place in the district and earning a playoff spot. The Cards came into the first round of the playoffs with a ton of excitement and confidence in their game and rightfully so.

They found themselves facing Brazosport in the first round of the playoffs and with the Bi-District Championship on the line the Cards came to play. The Cards used their speed and their crisp passes to get the Brazosport defenders out of position to get early scoring opportunities in the game.

Eventually the Cards were able to convert on these chances and opened the scoring int he first half. Leading 1-0 at halftime, the Cards knew that they were going to need at least one more goal if they were going to come away with the Bi-District Championship.

Brazosport was able to find a way to score a goal as well to make things close and give the Cards just a bit of anxiety. But the Cards stuck to their game plan, and they ended up finding the game’s winning goal to seal the victory and capture the Bi-District Championship.

For the first time in school history the Cards have captured the Bi-District title and now set their sights on the Area Round. The Cards ran into Manor New Tech looking to advance to the 3rd round of the playoffs.

The game ended up needing overtime carrying a score of 1-1 into the overtime period. Both goals came in the second half of the game but it was Manor New Tech who was able to break through and score the golden goal to advance to the 3rd round.

The Cards had a great season this year the ended earlier than they wanted but Cardinal soccer fans have a lot to look forward to as this team will be back next season hungry for more.
