Historic educator highlights San Felipe de Austin for local DRT

Nicole Shadle, lead educator at the San Felipe de Austin State historic site, presented a fascinating program on this remarkable landmark during the March 17 meeting of the Dilue Rose Harris chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT).

She delved into the actual history of the town and surrounding area and how it came to be part of the Texas Historical Commission. The site, situated just a mile from the Stephen F. Austin State Park, now offers a visitor center, museum, gift shop and reconstructed buildings of the original town of San Felipe.

Additionally, Shadle elaborated on the various programs that are presented weekly to visitors, such as tours, nature walks, archeology digs/ presentations, demonstrations, and living history programs. Occasionally there are very special reenactments, such as a wedding celebration, March on Fredonia, and the upcoming Burning of the Brazos on April 11, 2026.

The DRT is so fortunate to have a consequential historic site nearby (Sealy or San Felipe, TX) offering a wide variety of programs for adults and children alike. Visit their Facebook page or website (visitsanfelipedeaustin. com) for more information.
