As we approach the upcoming local elections, it’s the perfect time to reflect on why your vote truly matters. Colorado County will hold three elections on Saturday, May 2.
• Residents of Rice Consolidated ISD will elect a school board member.
• Registered voters within the city limits of Eagle Lake and Weimar will elect city council members.
Local elections deserve just as much attention as state and federal elections. The decisions made by school boards and city councils directly affect your daily life, your family, and your community.
Why are local elections important?
Local officials shape policies and decisions that influence:
• School procedures, funding, and staffing
• City budgets, ordinances, utilities, and essential services These positions are unpaid, filled by individuals who genuinely want to serve their communities.
Countywide voting on Election Day On Saturday, May 2, Colorado County will offer countywide voting, meaning you can cast your ballot at any of the five polling locations. No assigned polling place required.
Local elections often see lower turnout, yet they require the same resources as larger elections. Because all elections are 100% funded locally by your tax dollars, low turnout results in a much higher cost per ballot. Vote Centers are being used to make voting more convenient and accessible for everyone.
