Not just a walk in the park

VIEWPOINT FROM A TEXAS CHALLENGE ACADEMY CADET

Growing up, I faced difficult challenges that robbed me of my childhood. I have few happy memories, often overshadowed by pain. From the age of 10 and a half, I endured physical, emotional, and mental abuse while living with my biological father and stepmother. Thankfully, a compassionate case manager from Child Protective Services discovered the abuse and began gathering evidence to build a case for my safety.

During this time, my biological mother was released from prison, and worked hard to turn her life around. When she learned about the suffering my siblings and I were enduring, she fought in court to regain custody of us. Together with my stepfather, whom I regard as my real dad, they brought us to live with them in El Paso, Texas. This new chapter marked a significant change in my life, as they devoted themselves to caring for my siblings and me.

However, I struggled with resentment towards my mom. For a long time, I held her responsible for the pain I had experienced, believing that if she had been there for us, things could have been different. My anger was evident in my behavior, pushing my parents to seek help for me when they had exhausted their other options.

Ultimately, my peer leader at the youth recovery center recommended that I attend Texas Challenge Academy. At first, I felt overwhelmed by the program—the early mornings, the physical challenges, and the repetitive meals felt unbearable. But as I began to comply with the program’s structure, I realized that this approach would help me make the most of my time at TCA.

By embracing the philosophy of “COMPLY” and dedicating myself to my growth, I began to transform. I took pride in my progress and in making my family proud. Thanks to TCA, I have become the best version of myself, surpassing my own expectations. Though this journey hasn’t been a walk in the park, I now understand that I was meant to face these challenges. I feel grateful for the opportunity to grow and thrive.
