The Columbus Cardinals picked up their eighth loss of the season after falling to Hallettsville this week.

The Cards lost the game with a score of 2-1 and all of the runs were scored in the sixth and seventh inning.

The first five innings of this game were scoreless as the Cards searched for offense to open the scoring. But all eyes were on the defense in this game, and the Cards played some very stout defense.

They were led by Wyatt Tipton who pitched 6.2 innings, giving up only two runs on nine hits while striking out seven batters. He was relieved by Ty Wiggs who secured the final out of the game.

As for the scoring plays, in the top of the sixth inning Ryan Carter was the leadoff batter and he was walked to get a runner on base. Then a sacrifice bunt and a ground out followed, and Carter found himself on third base staring at home plate.

Then a wild pitch presented opportunity for Carter, and he stole home to give the Cards a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Hallettsville responded by scoring one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game up.

Then Hallettsville held the Cards to no runs in the seventh inning, and they scored once more in the bottom of the seventh inning to arrive at the final score of 2-1.

The Cards now look ahead to their next game against the Rice Consolidated Raiders on Tuesday, April 14, at 7 p.m.
