COLUMBUS REGIONAL QUALIFIERS

The Columbus Cardinals and Lady Cardinals traveled to Goliad to compete in the area meet.

In the area meet only the top four athletes in each event advance to the regional meet, and the Cards had athletes advance in eight events.

Starting things off with a field event, the Cards had two boys advance to the regional meet in the triple jump event. The first was Kash Wilbert who came in second place to advance to the regional meet.

The second was Brennan Hicks who came in fourth place to earn himself the final spot in the Regional Meet. Next was the boys’ 110m hurdles, and there was one Cardinal that punched his ticket to the regional meet.

Irving Giles matched Wilbert’s performance and came away with a silver medal in the 110m hurdles to earn a spot in the regional meet. Then in the 300m hurdles Giles and Wilbert raced against each other, and both made it into the top four.

Wilbert added another silver medal to his collection and gave him two events to compete in at the Regional Meet. Giles was not too far behind his teammate as he came in third place to take home a bronze medal and earn a spot in a second event at the Reginal meet.

Then finally for the boys, the 4x400m relay team consisting of Hicks, Elijah Owen, Giles and Wilbert. This team came in fourth place to claim the final spot in the Regional Meet to cap off the boys’ performance at the Area Meet.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Cards had just as much success as the boys did. Starting with the 100m dash, Katlyn Torres claimed the Area Championship and a gold medal to earn her spot at the Regional Meet.

In the girls’ 200m dash, another Lady Card punched her ticket to the Regional Meet as Faith Cleveland came in third place. In the 4x100m relay, the team of Lexi Kulhanek, Kaylea McCarthy, Cleveland and Torres came in second place.

In the 4x200m relays, the same team ran their hearts out and claimed the fourth and final spot at the reginal meet to cap off their performance.

Columbus now gets ready for their next track meet, which is the regional meet at Seguin High School, on Friday and Saturday May 1 and 2.
