CHPT launches 140th anniversary celebration of Stafford Opera House with “Community Roots” online auction

Auction proceeds directed to the Save Our Opera House capital campaign

The Columbus Historical Preservation Trust (CHPT) is proud to launch its Community Roots Online Auction, running Wednesday, April 29, through Sunday, May 3. All proceeds will benefit CHPT’s Save Our Opera House capital campaign, supporting the continued repair and restoration of the beloved landmark so it can serve Columbus for another 140 years.

Every great community is built on strong roots – shared history, familiar faces, and the kind of neighbors who show up when it matters. This spring, CHPT is celebrating exactly that. The Community Roots auction serves as the official kickoff to CHPT’s 140th anniversary celebration of the 1886 Stafford Opera House, and it’s an opportunity for the Columbus community to come together, share what makes this place special, and help preserve it for generations to come.

“As we begin to celebrate 140 years of the 1886 Stafford Opera House, the Community Roots auction feels especially significant. These auctions have become an important part of sustaining our preservation work, and we’re thankful for the continued enthusiasm and generosity of the community,” said Julie Prause, Board President.

This year’s auction will feature 40+ items donated by generous local businesses and community members, including unique dining experiences, tasty homemade treats, gardening supplies, kitchen essentials, and access to fun activities in and around Columbus. Because all items have been donated, 100% of the auction proceeds will fund preservation efforts of the Opera House. Bidding opens at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, and closes at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3. Browse the full catalog at https://bit. ly/2026CHPTauction.

“We’re incredibly grateful to the many local businesses and supporters who donated such fantastic items to this year’s Community Roots auction. There is truly something for everyone, and it’s a fun and meaningful way for the community to support our mission…just in time for Mother’s Day and upcoming graduation, too,” said Doris Klaus, Auction Chair.

To participate, bidders can create a free account on the auction site and sign up for email notifications to track new listings and outbid alerts. There is no cost to register or browse the catalog – just a chance to find something you love while supporting one of Columbus’s most treasured historic landmarks.

“The success of these community-based auctions is a wonderful reflection of how deeply our community values the 1886 Stafford Opera House and CHPT’s work in preservation and tourism. Every bid helps ensure these historic treasures continue to serve Columbus for generations to come. There is something for everyone, and we encourage you to take a look!” said Leslie Kinnear, Executive Director.

Columbus Historical Preservation Trust (CHPT) is dedicated to the preservation of the history and culture of Columbus, Texas.
