The Columbus Lady Cardinals are onto round three after capturing the area championship over Marion at Marion High School on Wednesday, April 29, and Friday, May 1.

They played in a three-game series, and they needed all three games to secure the championship.

In the first game, the Lady Cards played a very strong game on both sides of the ball. The Lady Cards opened the scoring in the top of the first inning where they scored three runs to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.

The runs were scored thanks to back-to-back doubles from Allie Cranek and Peyton Drozd to bring home two runs. Then Aggie Rodriguez hit a single to drive home the final run of the inning.

The Lady Cards then went scoreless until the fourth inning where they scored one more run thanks to a single from Kaylea Foster to make the score 4-0. In the top of the sixth inning, the Lady Cards scored two more runs thanks to a double from Kaylea McCarthy and a single from Foster to make the score 6-0.

Then finally in the seventh, Presley Drozd hit a sacrifice fly ball to drive in a run to arrive at the final score of 7-0.

While the Lady Cards secured a victory in game one, game two presented a different set of challenges, and the Lady Cards ended up on the losing end of that game. In game two, the Lady Cards had a 4-2 lead going into the fifth inning, but Marion started to find a rhythm offensively.

They scored one run in the fifth and then two more in the sixth inning to arrive at the final score of 5-4. The Lady Cards learned a lot from the loss and came back even stronger in game three.

In game three, the Lady Cards came out swinging again and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Thanks to a single from Peyton Drozd and a double from Rodriguez to bring home two runs.

The Lady Cards extended their lead in the top of the third by scoring one run thanks to Peyton Drozd, who grounded out but still drove in a run. Then the Lady Cards final two runs came in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a home run from Presley Drozd to make the score 4-0.

Then McCarthy hit a single that drove in the Lady Cards’ fifth and final run and gave the Lady Cards a 5-0 lead. Marion started to come back in the seventh inning, but the Lady Cards limited them to only two runs to capture the area championship.

The Lady Cards now look ahead to their round three matchup against Bishop on Thursday, May 7, at Almo Heights High School in San Antonio at 7 p.m.
